If you follow me on Instagram, then you may have heard me mention that I run multiple reselling accounts on Poshmark and Mercari. Many of you have been asking for more information about what that entails so today, I thought why not share a little more about it! For today’s post, I am going to share a little background into how I began running multiple accounts, how it has impacted my business, and address some commonly asked questions about it! Let’s get to it!
How I Began Running Multiple Reselling Accounts
A few years ago, while I was a part-time reseller, I began experimenting with selling men’s items. Back at that time, all of the items that I was selling were under one Poshmark and Mercari account. This main account contained all of my women’s, men’s, and home items. As the months went on, I noticed that the men’s items that I had in my closet really weren’t moving very well. Additionally, I noticed that most of the men’s items that I was selling were being purchased by women. I found this to be a very interesting observation from a business perspective.
I talked with my husband, Eric, about these observations and decided that it would be best to separate them from my main closet to see what would happen. In order to do this, I created separate Poshmark and Mercari accounts under his name and cross-listed all of the items into his accounts. Additionally, during this time, we did some extensive research and experimenting to see what men’s items and brands would succeed in his closet. After making this change, we noticed an increase in the number of men’s items selling across both reselling platforms. It appears as though running the accounts under his name attracted more male buyers and expanded our audience.
Rules for Running Multiple Reselling Accounts
When it comes to running multiple reselling accounts, there are some general rules to be aware of. For the purposes of this post, I am going to address Poshmark and Mercari, specifically, as those are the platforms that I have different accounts on.
Poshmark- When it comes to Poshmark, it is actually quite easy to run multiple accounts. In order to run multiple accounts under the same name on Poshmark, you need to reach out to Poshmark for written permission. If you do not, then you are violating community guidelines.
Mercari- When it comes to running multiple accounts on Mercari, it is a little more challenging. As of today, Mercari only allows for one account per person. Anyone who violates this can risk having all accounts permanently closed and also may be banned from their marketplace.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: If you can only have one reselling account per name, how do you run multiple accounts?
A: I am able to do this as one account is under my name and the other is under my husband’s name. The items under each account are different and the types of accounts that we have are different.
Q: What do you do about taxes since you have multiple accounts?
A: My husband and I file taxes jointly so it doesn’t affect us too much when it comes to taxes.
Q: Can you use the same address on both accounts?
A: Absolutely! If more than one seller lives at the same address, you can use the same address on different accounts. This is true for both Poshmark and Mercari.
Q: Can you use the same bank accounts on both accounts?
A: On Poshmark, you can use the same bank accounts on both accounts but on Mercari, each account needs to have its’ own bank account linked to it. To make life easier for me, I have found it wise to create separate bank accounts for your business and your personal expenses.
Q: Why did you choose to separate the men’s items and not other items?
A: At the time, I noticed that my men’s items were not receiving the same level of attention as my women’s items. In order to give them more exposure to the male audience, I thought it best to separate out those items and have them be sold by a male compared to a female. As ridiculous as this probably sounds, it did increase the amount of sales that I was making. Now, I am able to generate between $1000-$1500 a month from those accounts due to the separation.
Q: How does your husband’s Poshmark account compare to yours when it comes to Posh Ambassador status and size?
A: His accounts are much smaller compared to mine. His Poshmark account has between 200-300 listings and holds all of our men’s items in addition to some children’s sneakers. He purposely does not have a Posh Ambassador status. My closet, on the other hand, currently has 1300+ active listings and contains all of our women’s, children’s, and home items. Additionally, my Poshmark account has a Posh Ambassador II status.
*NOTE: As Poshmark continues to play around with their algorithm and ambassador status’, we thought it wise to keep one account as an ambassador account and the other as a non-ambassador account.
Conclusion
Personally, I have found that separating items across multiple accounts has been beneficial for my business. I cannot say that this will be successful for everyone but I have found personal success in it. Poshmark has made many changes in the last few months, some of which have negatively impacted my business. In order to combat these changes, I am willing to experiment with new business practices and reselling platforms in the hopes of having positive outcomes for my business. If this is something that you are able and willing to try, I highly suggest giving this method a go! I cannot guarantee that it will work for you but you’ll never know unless you try it!
