I’ll be the first to say that fall is my favorite time of year! There are so many fun events taking place, including Halloween, my birthday, and Christmas. As a reseller, it is important to plan for this busy time of year and for me, that planning starts now. Today, I wanted to share with you some data on Halloween from NRF along with some of my plans when preparing for the Halloween as a full-time reseller.
In years past, Halloween wasn’t really a thought in people’s minds until after Labor Day when most children were already back in school. Post-pandemic, that timeline has changed. This year, many retailers such as Target and Walmart have Halloween items available to shop online year round, while retailers such as TJ Maxx and HomeGoods started putting out Halloween decor in-stores following the July 4th holiday. This trend started back in 2021 and is continuing into 2022.
I am a big fan of looking at data before making big business decisions. One resource that has some great data regarding all major holidays is the NRF’s (National Retail Federation) website. (Linked HERE). Looking at last year’s data from the NRF can help me to make some informed business decisions as I plan for this current year.
According to the NRF’s data from 2021, it was estimated that Americans spent $10.14 billion dollars on Halloween-related goods; The average consumer spent $102.74 on Halloween decor. Of those surveyed, 46% of Americans had plans to dress up and it was estimated that $3.32 billion dollars was spent on costumes alone. Additionally, it was determined that 45% of those surveyed were planning to start shopping for Halloween the first week of September and 39% were planning to show during the first two weeks of October.
Although this data isn’t for 2022 specifically, I definitely think that it can be helpful when planning your Halloween shopping as a reseller. This is especially true if you are a reseller who sells Halloween costumes and home decor.
Another interesting piece of information that I find useful is in regards to the top Halloween costumes. These costumes may not be in the same order of popularity this year but I can confidently say that many of these costumes will remain popular this coming year.
Top 10 Children’s Halloween Costumes According to NRF in 2021:
1) Spiderman
2) Princess
3) Batman
4) Superhero
5) Witch
6) Ghost
7) Pumpkin
8) Superman
9) Zombie
10) Avenger’s Costume
Other Events to Consider
When it comes to preparing your reselling business for Halloween, I think that is important to consider other events when making purchasing decisions and time frames.
As someone who lives less than 2 hours away from Orlando, I am overloaded with advertising regarding Halloween-related events at both Universal Studios and Walt Disney World. Many people travel from out-of-state to attend these events and most people with either wear Halloween-themed apparel or costumes reflecting characters from the theme park(s) that they are visiting.
Here are a few events to keep in mind with their dates:
Walt Disney World’s Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Event– Select Nights from 8/12/2022 through 10/31/2022
Disneyland’s Oogie Boogie Bash- Select Nights from 9/6/2022 through 10/31/2022
Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights– Select Nights from 9/2/2022 through 10/31/2022
I attended Walt Disney World’s Halloween event last year and I can say from experience that many adults and children will dress up for the event (myself included). Disney’s Halloween celebration starts earlier than most Halloween-themed events so people will begin to shop for them earlier than most retailers. As a reseller, it is a great idea to have Halloween costumes stocked in your store as early as possible because you never know when people might start looking for costumes.
