I’m sure that you know by now that I am an avid Poshmark user. Little did I know that 3 years ago this little app on my iPhone would shape my current shopping habits. So how did it all begin?
It all started when I received a Coach wristlet from my parents for Christmas. I was not a fan. You must know that for as long as I can remember I have never been one to blend in. I’m one of those rare women who has an innate desire to stand out for the right reasons. Growing up in a town where every girl struts around in Coach, North Face, and Uggs, I knew that this puppy needed to go. So what do you do when you are a college student looking to make a little extra money quickly? You sell it online!
As someone who knew nothing about resale, I had no idea what I was doing. I did a Google search for apps where I could sell things and I stumbled across Poshmark. Back then, the app wasn’t as well-known as it is now but it looked promising so I gave it a shot. Why not, right? Then, I sold that wristlet online for $12. Score! After visiting my local Goodwill the week prior, I realized that I could buy items at my local thrift store, sell them online and make a decent profit. For a girl who loved shopping and business, this seemed like a very good idea. Three years later and I am still going strong!
So, how did this one little app change my shopping habits you may ask? Here’s how:
1. You Don’t Always Need to Pay Full-Price for Designer- The first time I ever went into a thrift shop, I found a beautiful DVF top. Back then, I didn’t know much about designers but I knew just by looking at it that it was expensive. It opened my world to the concept that you don’t need to dish out a lot of money for high-end items. Besides, I was a poor college student so I couldn’t really do that even if I wanted to. Although I only knew the selling aspect of Poshmark, I quickly became familiar with the buying aspect as well. Poshmark provided me with a platform to buy designer items for a fraction of the cost. Some items still had tags on them! How can you say no to that?
2. Each Item Holds a Market Value- One of the most important business lessons that I have ever learned is the value of a dollar, particularly in the world of resale. Before I ever buy or list an item on Poshmark, I research the item online and/or through the app itself. Why? Well, each buyer believes that their item holds a certain value and not all buyers are the same. As someone who has been involved in the resale business for years, I know that in order to sell an item, you need to keep it as close to market value as possible. Slightly lower is even better. Knowing the market value of an item is just as important for the consumer as well. You never ever want to overpay for an item so please make sure that you do your homework beforehand!
3. Try New Things- One of the best parts about using this app is that it provides you with the opportunity to step outside your comfort zone. With such a large variety of items to choose from, you can find a great deal on so many one-of-a-kind pieces. Why blend in when we were each born to stand out? Take a chance and try something new! Whether it be strutting your stuff in new heels, bundling up in a black fur vest, or walking around with a new bag, you never know what amazing things could happen when you embrace something new!
