When I first started on Poshmark in 2013, I had no clue what I was doing. The app was pretty new and there wasn’t anyone that you could ask questions to. You were forced to figure it out on your own. So with that in mind, I slowly started acquiring inventory which was any and everything that I could find (and also deemed as being cute and “sellable”). I wasn’t looking at brands and comps, I was just buying to buy (which is a no-no by the way). I was in a phase with much trial-and-error to see what worked and what didn’t work. Now, let’s jump ahead 6 years and see how so much has changed…
First, the way that I source for inventory has changed dramatically from when I first started out. One item that has evolved with me the most is denim. Before, I used to buy any and all jeans that I deemed as being cute. Now, I only buy specific denim brands and styles. Why? Because as more and more people are joining the reselling game, more and more items/categories/brands are becoming oversaturated which is making it harder for your items to be noticed.
For the longest time, I was having a very difficult time selling denim. I don’t know if it was because I was poorly educated on the subject or wasn’t picking up the correct items. But looking back at it now, it was probably a little bit of both. After both re-listing the items a few times and also, taking new photos without anything moving, I realized that something just wasn’t working. So a few days later, I took everything that I had to Plato’s Closet where they bought them from me and I made my money back. At that point, I realized that the only way that I would successfully sell denim would be if I only bought what people wanted. And that meant that I could only sell specific brands and styles.
So, what did I do next? I hopped on the Poshmark site and did a LOT of research on denim brands and styles. After I was done, I made a list of everything that I wanted to sell on the app moving forward. I know that I’m talking specifically about denim here but remember that all of this can be applied to any and all items sold on the app. If a specific category has many items sitting for a long period of time without much movement, it may be time to analyze that category and try to figure out why those items aren’t moving.
Some Things to Think About When Analyzing Categories:
Is the item in high demand?
Is it a more recent style?
Is the item/brand oversaturated?
Are my photos capturing the item at it’s best?
Have I provided all the necessary information to help it to sell?
