Yes, you read that correctly; Eric accidentally purchased an item during a Poshmark Live Show. Based on many of your experiences with Poshmark Live Shows, it appears that this happens more frequently than I realized. Today, I wanted to share with you what happened, how Poshmark handled it, and share some thoughts on how Poshmark can proactively take steps to prevent this from happening on the app. Let’s get into it!
How We Ended Up With a Kate Spade Purse on Accident
A few days ago, Eric and I were eating lunch at the table when he received a notification that he won an item from a Poshmark Live Show auction. We were both immediately confused as neither of us were actively in a Poshmark Live Show auction. When I clicked on the notification, it showed that he purchased a Kate Spade handbag for $25. Panic crept in as my first instinct was that the account was hacked so we immediately reset the password. Then, we reached out to Poshmark to see what to do next. In the meantime, we were trying to figure out what happened. The only conclusion that we could make was that Eric accidentally clicked into a live show while his phone was in his pocket and a bid was accidentally placed without his knowledge. I didn’t realize that the button to enter a live show and the button to bid on an item were essentially in the same clicking area so it would be really easy to bid on something without meaning to.
Poshmark’s Response and Additional Steps
Within 24 hours of this happening, we received a response from Poshmark via email. In summary, we were told that we should be more careful about bidding on items as accidental purchases cannot be cancelled. The only option that we had was to reach out to the seller to see if they would be willing to cancel the order before the item shipped. Since the item was only $25, I decided to let the seller send it as I should be able to make my money back on the item. Additionally, it was not the buyer’s fault that this happened and they shouldn’t have to cancel the order on my behalf.
When it comes to Live Shows, I do think that there are some issues that Poshmark needs to resolve before it can fully be out of the beta phase. First and foremost, Poshmark needs to add an extra layer of protection to the bidding process during Poshmark Live Shows and auctions; Specifically, there needs to be a confirmation button that a buyer has to press in order to finalize a bid or purchase. This would catch many mistakes before they happen and eliminate accidental purchases. Next, Poshmark needs a less strict return policy for accidental purchases under its’ current system. Currently, Poshmark does not allow cancellations for accidental purchases under any circumstances and it is up to the seller’s discretion as to whether or not an order can be cancelled. I understand why Poshmark has this policy in place from a business perspective but as a buyer who has experienced this problem firsthand, there need to be some exceptions. Finally, Poshmark needs to give buyers the option to opt out of Live Show notifications completely. This would ensure that buyer’s cannot accidentally click into a show and buy an item.
