It’s everyone’s favorite time of year- Yellow Tag Clearance at Marshalls and TJ Maxx! This past weekend, I went to not only my local TJ Maxx/Marshall’s stores but also all of the stores out in the Syracuse area. I didn’t find too much while I was out-and-about but I did find a few gems (mostly kids clothes though). For today’s post, I wanted to share some tips on how to shop Yellow Tag Clearance as a reseller!
Tip #1: Look Up Comps on EVERYTHING (and I mean EVERYTHING!)
This tip is very important! Whenever I shop the Yellow Tag Clearance event, I always get swept up in the great items that I find at thrift store prices. BUT don’t let the prices and brands fool you! Look up every single piece that you find because although you might think that it is a great day, the reality is that 20 other people are selling the same item as you and the market is oversaturated. (And this happens a LOT with Free People items.) Also, I’ve noticed that with some NWT Free People items, the tags are for the wrong items so be aware of that.
Tip #2: Know How to Read The Tags
Most people don’t think to learn how to read store tags but it can be your biggest help in clearance events. There are many former TJ Maxx employees online who are more than willing to share the structure of their retail tags. Two tips that I learned from these fellow employees are: (1) You can find the original TJ Maxx price on the top right hand corner of the tag and (2) There is a number on the bottom right of the clearance tag that indicates the markdown. This number should increase as the weeks go on and should also match other clearance tags. If this number does not match other clearance tags, then it may have missed a markdown.
Tip #3: Check for Flaws and/or Defects
Sometimes finding an item that retailed for $300+ for $10 can be a deal too good to be true! I’ll give you an example, yesterday, I found a pair of Current/Elliott jeans that retailed for over $300+ for $10. I was so excited when I found them but upon further inspection, I noticed that they were missing 2 buttons so I had to leave them behind. Before heading to the checkout line, be sure to thoroughly check out your items for any flaws or defects.
