So it is no surprise that I love to shop secondhand. I do shop retail but thrifting will always have a special place in my heart. As a successful seller on Poshmark for the past few years, I have conquered the world of resale. Although I do know quite a bit about this business, I am always looking to learn and develop within it. Learning from my fellow Poshmark friends has helped me to develop into the reseller that I am today. The first step to mastering the world of resale is to master the world of the thrift store. Okay, so let’s go!
When you first enter a thrift store, it can appear pretty intimidating. With so much merchandise in sight, it can be difficult to figure out where to start. Here is the order in which I navigate through a thrift store:
1. Shoes/Purses
2. Dresses
3. Blazers/ Jackets
4. Tops
5. Bottoms
Yes, there is a method to my madness. Please, let me explain. First, I start with the accessories (shoes, purses, wallets, etc.). The reason is very simple, this is where you are going to get the most bang for your buck! Personally, my largest sellers are shoes and handbags so I dedicate more time and money into them. This is where most you will spend the most amount of time so why not start off here? If you see something that catches your eye while looking through this section, put it in your cart and hold onto it. Other people may have their eyes on the same item so hold onto it and then make a final decision later. Trust me on this one.
After I finish in the shoes, I head over to the dress section. These are consistently my second highest sellers so I want to spend a good amount of time sifting through the racks. This is definitely a hit-or-miss section so don’t be discouraged if you don’t find a treasure every time. Just a quick note on best-selling styles on Poshmark: Focus on style over brand. I know that this might sound counterintuitive but on-trend styles tend to do really well on Poshmark. While shopping for inventory, try to find pieces that are on-trend. If you need a recap on the latest trends, just pick up any fashion magazine at the store and skim through it.
Once I finish up in the dress section, I move on to the blazers and jackets. This is the area where I spend the most amount of money while shopping for inventory. Why? Well, jackets and blazers have a pretty high resale value, especially if it is made by a high-end brand. There have been countless times that I have spent between $10-$15 for a jacket and later resold it for $100+. Again, this is another hit-or-miss section so don’t be discouraged if you don’t find a hidden treasure right away.
Finally, I conclude my trip by doing a quick look through the tops and bottoms. Recently, tops have been selling really well for me so I have been spending more time in this section than usual. This may sound odd, but I have found that the best stuff is often hidden within the colorful mix-and-match sections (aka the printed tops and bottoms).
