Last week, I was in New York City visiting my brother. While I was in the Big Apple, I spent time shopping (both thrift and retail) and visiting amazing museums and restaurants. Typically, I go into the city multiple times during the year but on this trip, I wanted to make sure that we visited places that we had never visited before (aka do all of the tourist stuff that no native New Yorker would actually do). This week, I am going to share with you some of the places that I visited over the past few days. WARNING: There are a LOT pictures ahead so don’t say that you haven’t been warned lol. Today, I will be sharing with you my day trip to Brooklyn and let you in on a few secrets to navigating the Big Apple. Let the adventure begin!
1. Visiting the Brooklyn Bridge
The first stop of the day was visiting the Brooklyn Bridge. For those of you that aren’t familiar, the Brooklyn Bridge is a walkable bridge connecting the NYC boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. I am going to warn you now that this is a HUGE tourist trap so be ready for a lot of vendors and selfie sticks. Walking the bridge takes about 30 minutes or so depending on how crowded it is. Whether you are taking views of the harbor (where you can see the State of Liberty), the Manhattan skyline, or the beauty of the bridge itself, you won’t be disappointed.
2. Heading to the Instagram Famous- Washington Street
If you’ve ever been on Instagram and looked at pictures of NYC, you would know about the famous Washington Street in Brooklyn. Once you cross the bridge into Brooklyn, walk a few streets down and you will find this cool spot. This place is famous because of its’ unique view of capture warned, there are a TON of people there trying to capture this shot and there will be competition. I was able to get the PERFECT shot but I’m keeping it to myself as I am going to get it framed in the future. But for today, I will share some of my favorite pics from this spot.
3. Brooklyn’s Hidden Gem, The NYC Transit Museum
One of favorite spots of the day was the NYC Transit Museum which was a quick subway ride from the Brooklyn Bridge. This is probably one of the coolest museums that I have ever been to. Admission was $10 for adults but worth every penny. The museum is in an abandoned subway station which adds to the atmosphere as it is a museum about NYC’s subways and trains. On the upper floor, you can walk through the history of the NYC subway from when it was built through its’ current system, view various maps illustrating how the railway and subway systems have evolved over the years, and read comics referring to subways around the world. On the bottom level, you can walk through every subway car that has ever existing in the NYC system with the earliest one from the early 1900’s.
