Happy Monday! Per request, today’s post will focus on selling dresses on Poshmark. This is the first installment of my six part Posh series discussing how to sell dresses, shoes, tops, bottoms, outerwear and accessories on the app. For those of you that aren’t familiar with my Poshmark journey so far, here is a little bit about my love for Poshmark. I am a four-year veteran of Poshmark and have given hundreds of items new homes over the years. To say the least, I know a thing or two about the world of Poshmark.
So for today’s post, I wanted to share with you guys some information about selling dresses on the app. Dresses are the most successful items for me to sell on Poshmark so let’s start there!
Q: Why should I sell dresses on Poshmark?
A: Personally, I sell dresses on Poshmark because the category as a whole is very successful. Let me explain what I’m talking about. When I compare the cost that I pay per dress to the amount that it sells for, I have great margins. One reason that dresses sell so well is because they are equivalent to a top and bottom in one. As a result, people will spend a little bit more on them. Ever go to a thrift store and notice that the dress section is always a hot spot? Well, that’s why.
Q: What style dresses should I sell?
A: When I sell dresses on the app, I pick pieces that are trendy and mesh well with my closet’s vibe. Typically, I buy dresses that are a solid color, on trend, and unique. Whenever, I find dresses that are NWT and trendy, I immediately scoop them up as they will sell quickly for me. My favorite dresses to sell are typically long sleeve, midi, and special occasion dresses. Also, I look for expensive detailing as it adds value to the dress.
Q: How much should I invest in a dress to sell?
A: This is going to vary per person. Typically, I spend between $2.50 and $7.99 per dress but on occasion I will spend more if it is a high designer piece. I am always trying to keep my margins high so I am very conscious how much I spend. How much I invest on a dress is based on its’ return. Having sold merchandise for 4 years, I can approximate how much a piece is worth so I spend accordingly. For example, let’s say that I find a TOBI dress while looking through the racks one day. Typically, I will spend as little on the dress as possible as they do not sell for much. However, if I find an Anthropologie dress, I know that I can sell it for much more so I will invest more into it.
Q: What is your average cost per item?/ What is your average sale per item?
A: My average cost per dress is $5.99 and my average sale per dress is $30. (Note: This does not include high designer dresses only trendy pieces)
Q: What brands should I sell?
A: My favorite brands to sell with high turnover rates are Anthropologie brands, Asos, Athleta, Zara, J Crew, Banana Republic, Topshop, For Love & Lemons, and Free People.
Q: Do dresses make up the majority of your Poshmark closet?
A: Yes, dresses make up the majority of my closet. I would approximate that 35% of my closet contains dresses leaving the other 65% for tops, bottoms, shoes, outerwear and accessories combined.
Q: What is your average turnover rate on dresses?
A: This depends on the brand of the dress but on average, dresses typically take 10 days or less to sell for me.
Q: Where do you go to shop for dresses to sell on Poshmark?
A: I find my inventory at various thrift stores, Plato’s Closet, and Clothes Mentor.
I hope that you found this information helpful and if you have any questions about selling dresses on Poshmark, please don’t hesitate to email me. I would be more than happy to help!
