One question that I have been asked quite a bit lately is, ‘How do you know your brands so well? I’m new to reselling and am not familiar with my brands. I want to only buy brands that will make me a lot of quick sales. Please help.’ Yes, someone asked me this question last week and I want to take a moment to talk about this topic with you. As many of you may or may not know, I have been on my reselling journey for 6 years now. Over the past 6 years, I have learned a LOT about the reselling world through both other resellers and through my own hard work, dedication, and experience. Many people when they ask me this question expect me to give them a clear cut, cookie cutter answer so that they can bypass all of the messy middle work and get to the highly anticipated end result- making lots of sales and doing little work to get there. Sorry to have to share the bad news with you but that is unfortunately not how this works. I will be more than willing to provide you with the tools to help you get there but you are going to have to experience the messy middle work just like the rest of us. Heck, I’m still experiencing the messy middle work myself after doing this for 6 years! The last thing that I want to do is be a Negative Nancy on here but part of me giving you the tools for success is being honest with you and preparing you for what to expect on this journey. It’s not easy and you need to be ready for everything that comes along with it if you want to take it seriously. But enough about that, today I do want to share with you 3 ways that you can familiarize yourself with brands for resale in order to have more sales. Let’s take a look below!
- Visit Department Store Websites
This might sound a little odd but one of the best ways to learn brands is to visit the brand directory on a large department store’s website. I would browse websites such as Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, and Bergdorf Goodman’s. These stores have a plethora of brands to look through and carry brands at all different price points.
2. Search on Poshmark
This one might sound like a no-brainer but be sure to take advantage of the Poshmark app and website. Whenever you make any searches on the app, you can sort by brand. Take a moment to study the brands listed and maybe click on a few. By doing this, you will learn your brands and also learn what brands are more desirable than others.
3. When in Doubt, Google It
This tip applies when you are sourcing for inventory at a store. There are many times when I am sourcing at a thrift store that I come across a quality, constructed piece made by a brand that I am unfamiliar with. And what do I do in these situations…. I Google It!! I have learned so many new brands this way and I have used the knowledge gained from these searches for future sourcing trips.
