Inspiration: Express
Yesterday, I was scrolling through the Express website when I instantly fell in love with this look (featured left). Personally, I would have never thought to pair a leather jacket with a polka dot dress. So me being me, I decided to give it a shot; I have nothing to lose, right? I first started off by seeing how much the dress cost on the Express website. When I saw the $70 price tag, I immediately knew that I was not paying that much for a rayon dress. (Fun Fact: When you shop at thrift stores all the time, you rethink paying retail for anything.) So onto the next best thing, shopping my closet! And what do you know, I own all 3 key pieces that the Express model is wearing in the inspiration photo: nude heels, a leather jacket, and a polka dot dress.
While it’s nice to upgrade your wardrobe every so often, most people can’t afford to do so all the time. But that doesn’t mean that you cannot head over to your favorite retailer, like Express, for example and still window shop. Although designers put out new collections every season, most key pieces transition from year to year. As a result, you don’t need to re-buy the essentials every year; Instead, you build outfits around them.
Like I mentioned above, I had the 3 key pieces to recreate this look already in my closet. But for those of you that don’t have all of the pieces needed to create a designer look, here are some tips to help you recreate it for less:
1. Visit Your Local Thrift or Consignment Store to Find Similar Items for Less
2. Create a “Similar” Look Using Similar Materials, Patterns, Etc.
3. Shop the Sale Section of your Local Retail Store
4. Shop Your Own Closet (Or Your Mom’s, Or Your Sister’s, Or Your Best Friend’s)
5. Be Creative
