In today’s world, so many people strive to be a trendsetter or influencer. And they are often asking themselves what they need to do to stand out. As a result, many fashionistas incorporate fashion trends into their everyday wardrobes. However, over the years, I have learned that there is a right and wrong way to do this. Don’t get me wrong, I love trends as much as the next person but as with anything in life, you need balance. I mean, look at my ruffle sweater above, for example. It’s trendy and cute but I bought it because it fits into my style and brand. I didn’t buy it because 50 girls on Instagram have it too. (Are you seeing where I am going with this?) And with that, let’s talk about how you can incorporate fashion trends into your wardrobe too!
The Right Way: Buy it Because You Like it
This is probably going to sound counterintuitive coming from somebody who is striving to be an influencer/trendsetter herself, but but it because you like it. Don’t just buy it because you see some celebrity or fashion influencer wearing it on Instagram. Remember, you are the one who will be spending the money on it and wearing it everyday. You really need to make sure that YOU like the item, that the item is flattering on YOUR body type, and that it is versatile in YOUR wardrobe. Remember, your style is more about you and less about them.
The Right Way: Does it Fit into the Rest of Your Wardrobe?
Okay, so how does the trend work with the rest of your wardrobe? How many items in your closet can you pair it with? If the item in question doesn’t work with your existing wardrobe, then you don’t need it. Are you going to be able to wear it in the years to come? If the answer is no, you don’t need it. The moral of the story here is that you should be only investing in pieces that are going to long-term investments and fit in with your signature style.
The Wrong Way: Don’t Just Buy it Because it’s Cheap
So this one goes without saying, don’t just buy something because it is cheap or on sale. I mean, don’t get me wrong, sometimes, you can find some great pieces on sale which is great. But that doesn’t mean that you impulsively buy something just because it is 50% off. This is especially true when it comes to trendy pieces. These pieces are constantly on sale as stores need to move inventory in order to make room for the next season’s trend. Like I’ve already said, make sure that you are buying pieces that work with your wardrobe and fit in with your signature style.
The Wrong Way: Everyone is Wearing It
Again, I really want to emphasize that just because everyone is wearing it doesn’t mean that you need to be wearing it too. If it is something that you genuinely need or are interested in, then that is one thing. However, don’t let social media influence your buying decision too much. Remember, your wardrobe is for you and you alone. Make sure that every piece in your closet has a clear purpose.
