Many people don’t know this but I used to be the main buyer at a buy-sell-trade store within the Winmark Corporation. You’re probably thinking ‘What does that have to do with anything?’ Well, it means that I know a thing or two about searching for flaws on items. Today, I wanted to share with you a few tips and tricks when it comes to inspecting items while sourcing.
Tip #1: Look at the Item Under GOOD Lighting
Not all stores have great lighting but there are a few ways that you can get around that. If possible, try to look at the item near a window so that you can get a good, clear look at the item. If there are no windows and no fluorescent lights, I would suggest looking at the item in an open area with no shadows.
Tip #2: First Impressions Matter
Inspect the front and back of the item in its’ entirety for obvious flaws. Don’t be afraid to run your hands over the item to feel for any holes or fabric flaws. Also, lay the item flat to get the best look at the tiem
Tip #3: Check Collars and Cuffs
Collars are notorious for makeup stains and cuffs sometimes house food stains. These are two easy places to check for staining as it can be common in these areas.
Tip #4: It’s All In the Details
Take a look at any detailing on the item along with any buttons, snaps, and hooks. These items are easily broken and/or missing. Also, be sure to always test out any zippers.
Tip #5: Check the Seams
Properly checking the seams is a 2 step process: (1) Run your hands over the seams to see if there are any holes and (2) Turn the item inside out to ensure that all seams are intact.
I hope that you find this quick and easy guide helpful!
