For as long as I can remember, I have always loved to go shopping whenever I go on vacation. Growing up, I lived in a rural area so whenever we would go on vacation to a bigger city, I always used to look forward to seeing what treasures they had there. Now that I live in a “bigger city” and have access to many more items, I look forward to seeing what I can find whenever I return back home. Today, I thought that it would be fun to share with you how I source for inventory when I am on vacation.
Be Mindful of Luggage Space
Whenever I go sourcing on vacation, I am always mindful of how much luggage space I have. On some trips, I have an entire luggage worth of space while other times, I only have enough room for 3-5 smaller items. That being said, I try to focus my attention on unique pieces that I may not be able to find where I currently reside. As much as I would love to buy every amazing thing that I find while on vacation, that just isn’t always realistic. Instead, by focusing on a few unique pieces, I can maximize my luggage space and hopefully, sell the unique items at a higher price point.
Be Aware of Varying Prices Across Areas
Thrift store prices vary across the country. For example, a dress at a New York City thrift store can cost between $15-$30+ while a dress in Tampa will typically cost you between $6-$10. This is something to be aware of whenever you go thrifting in a new city. I would suggest that before you go sourcing, do a quick Google search and read the reviews to see which stores are worth stopping into. Generally, smaller thrift stores tend to be more expensive that larger stores but it really does depend on the thrift store and location. Just know that thrift stores may cost more or less than what your are used to depending on where you are in the country.
Focus on Items that You Don’t Normally Have Access To
This is something that I like to do whenever I go sourcing in a new area. Living in Florida, there are many items that I don’t normally have access to that other areas do and vice versa. Whenever I go sourcing on vacation, I try to focus all of my attention on items that are really difficult for me to find in Florida. A few items that I will typically look for when in colder climates are jackets/coats, sweaters, and boots. Summer clothing is plentiful in Florida so I usually don’t have a problem finding those items.
Shop Off Season
I’ve always been one to shop for inventory off-season. I enjoy doing this because it is a lot easier to find inventory as there is typically more of it. For example, I like to shop for long sleeves and winter items in the summer time as most people are not shopping for those items during that time. Same goes for summer items in the winter months. Although these items may sit for a little while, at you know that you have the inventory prepared for those specific months.
