At some point or another, every reseller will need to step away and take a break from their business. This break could last a few days or perhaps a few weeks. But before taking a break from your business, there are few things that you need to do as a reseller to ensure a smooth transition back into your business once your break is over. Today, I wanted to share with you a few things that I like to do to prepare for a break in my reselling business.
Currently, my business is shut down until January 2, 2022 as I will be returning back to New York for Christmas and New Year’s festivities. Before leaving for New York, there are a few things that I proactively did as a reseller to ensure that I would be able to step right back into my business when I returned back to Florida:
Have a Week’s Worth of New Inventory
Before leaving, I like to make sure that I have at least 1 week’s worth of inventory to add to my reselling platforms ready for when I return. This will allow me to not have to scramble to get when I get back as I already have new inventory prepped and ready to go. Usually, I will go sourcing a week of two before leaving so that I have plenty of time to prep my new items. Personally, I don’t like to feel rushed when I come back from a vacation or break so by preparing ahead of time, I can transition back into reselling a lot more smoothly.
Inventory Clean Out
Another activity that I like to do before leaving for a vacation or break, is clean out my inventory. This is especially true if my break is at the end of the year. Usually, I will start this process a week or two beforehand; Within that timespan, I will take some items to buy-sell-trade stores, run a closet sale, and send items away to ThredUp. I do this so that when I come back, I have less inventory to manage. Also, I am very well-known for buying inventory when I travel so this allows me room to add it to my existing inventory.
Financial Planning
Taking a break in your reselling business requires a lot of prep work, not only in dealing with your inventory but also with your finances. When your reselling business is not operating, you are not making any income (unless you have items on consignment elsewhere). Not having that income for an extended period of time could affect your livelihood so it is important to plan ahead for that.
Now that we’ve discussed some ways that I will prepare for a break in my reselling business, let’s discuss how to actually shut down operations.
Shutting Down Your Platforms
Each platform that I use requires a different shut down process. Let me share with you how to shut down each one:
Poshmark- This is one of the easier platforms to shut down. All you have to do is go to My Seller Tools -> Vacation Hold -> Add in the dates that you would like your closet to be on Vacation mode for.
Tradesy- This platform is similar to Poshmark in that all you have to do is go to your closet settings and activate Vacation Mode. There is a single button that will turn it on or off.
Mercari- This platform is the most time-consuming of the bunch. In order to shut everything down on Mercari, you need to physically deactivate every single listing one by one. This process can be tedious but luckily, you can deactivate up to 20 listings at time. In order to reactivate your listings, you need to reactivate them individually or up to 20 at once in bulk.
