If you are a reseller, then you are familiar with the phrase, “Summer Slowdown.” If you are unfamiliar with this phrase, in short, it refers to the slow down of sales that occurs during the summer months of a reselling business. Personally, I had never heard of this phrase until I entered the reselling community on Instagram many years ago. And it got me thinking- why are resellers using this phrase to describe their businesses?
I believe that this whole, “summer slowdown” phrase is a way for resellers to socially feel better about not being proactive with their reselling businesses during the summer months. Let me explain…. If you are someone who takes your reselling business seriously, then you will not have a summer slowdown because you are constantly nurturing your business and paying attention to its’ needs and wants. More than likely, you are staying ahead of consumer trends, stocking your closet with inventory that people are actively searching for, and keeping track of your inventory levels while also adding new items regularly. By doing this, you are keeping your business in tip-top shape and people want to buy items from you.
So What Causes the Summer Slowdown?
From experience, I can say that the summer slowdown that people are referring to is the result of poor proactive reselling behaviors. And I think that the biggest problem during the summer months is that people don’t transition from summer inventory to fall inventory at the correct times. This is something that I had to opportunity to explore this past month as I am preparing my closet for back-to-school and return to work for many. Living in the Northeast, people would start shopping for back-to school in August; Living here in Florida, back-to-school shopping starts in July as kids return back to school in August. This was a big transition for me, as normally, I would not start filling my closet with fall inventory until the end of July or beginning of August.
As you all know, this year has been an odd one where past consumer trends don’t really apply. But filling my closet with fall inventory sooner rather than later has actually resulted in some of my best sales months that I have ever had making that so-called summer slowdown nonexistent.
Here are a few tips on how to maximize your profits and avoid the summer slowdown:
~Learn Your Optimal Summer to Fall Inventory Transition Timeframe~
As I mentioned above, learning this timeframe is key to avoiding the summer slowdown. This may take some experimentation to figure out but once you do, you will avoid the summer slowdown for years to come. [NOTE: If your closet is not filled with fall fashion right now, I would be sure to go sourcing for fall inventory as people are actively buying it as we speak.]
~Stock Your Closet with Consumer Trends~
As a reseller, you always to want to stay ahead of the trends and know what is trending within the consumer market at all times. This coming month, there are two trends that are going to be very important to the success of your sales, back-to-school fashion and work wear. Based on my sales in July, I can say that sales in work wear pieces are going to increase dramatically so be sure to pick up any business casual pieces that you find, especially blazers.
