In the 8+ years that I have been reselling, I have made a LOT of shipping errors. You name it and I have probably done it. As horrible as some of these mistakes have been, they have also helped me to evolve my business practices and grow my business. Today, I put together a list of some little things that I do when sending out packages that have helped me to minimize shipping errors. I hope that this helps you in minimizing your shipping errors too!
Use a Tape Dispenser
This tape dispenser (linked HERE) is probably the best $15 that I have ever spent on items for shipping (minus my mailers). It makes shipping my packages, especially boxes, SO much easier and I cannot say enough good things about it. Although I know that it is not the greatest for the environment, I use a good amount of tape on my packages because I want to be extra careful and make sure that my items arrive to my buyers in one piece.
Label Shipping Labels
After I print off all of my shipping labels, I will write the name of the item that the label belongs to on the back in pen. I have accidentally switched orders before and this helps me to minimize the chances of that happening again. To be extra cautious, I will also write the name of the item on the mailer or box. I would much rather be safe than sorry!
Secure with Tape
As I mentioned previously, I use quite a bit of tape on my packages. I primarily use poly mailers when I ship items. Although it may not be pretty, I will take over the back self-adhesive with shipping tape. Unfortunately, I have had some packages arrive to buyers damaged in the past and this helps to minimize that from happening on future sales.
Tape Over Shipping Labels
I don’t have a fancy label printer so I print out my labels on computer paper. When I attach the label to my poly mailers, I tape over the entire label in shipping tape. I do this so that the label cannot be altered by either a person while the package is in transit or by the weather.
Look at Location
This might sound strange but I always like to look and see where an item is going before shipping it. My packaging will vary depending on the climate of where the item is going and the route that it will take to get there. For example, if I have a package going to another part of Florida, I may only send an item in a mailer. However, if my item was going to New York, I may double bag it or place the item in the box in addition to mailers as there is a greater possibility that it will experience snow or rain on its’ journey.
Report Shipping Delays
My Poshmark tracking has been very delayed lately. In order to prevent an order from being cancelled for delayed shipping, I have been reporting listings that don’t start tracking within a few hours to Poshmark. Once I do this, the tracking magically appears shortly thereafter. Also, if the package does not track on its’ own within a few days, it will automatically mark the item as “shipped.”
