Last month, I made the decision to change how I photograph items for my full-time reselling business. As I have been a reseller on Poshmark for 10 years now, I felt that it was time to make some necessary updates to my reselling business. One of the updates that I made was in regards to how I style and photograph the items that I am selling. After testing a few different formats and styles, I have settled on a layout and design that has led to more sales for my business. Upon making that discovery, I decided that the next logical step for my business was to re-photograph all of my inventory in order to maximize my items’ chances of selling. Throughout all of June, I will be re-photographing and re-listing all of my items across all platforms and today I wanted to share with you my preparations and game plan for doing just that.
The decision to re-photograph all of my inventory was something that I have been going back and forth on over the past 2 months. It is a LOT of work to photograph and update 2000+ pictures and listings. BUT I also know that in order to grow my business, constant improvements and updates need to be made. Today, I thought that it would be helpful to share with you my exact plan for tackling this major project and how I have been preparing over the past few weeks.
Deciding on a New Format and Style
The first thing that I needed to decide on was the new format and style of my photos. I have used the same photography setup for the past 5 years. Although I don’t mind using this format for my photos (Check out THIS post to learn more), I know that they could be brighter and more appealing to buyers. After playing around with a few different options, I settled on the layouts below:
This is my updated shoe and accessories layout which includes a flat lay with different textures:
This is my updated clothing layout which includes hanging clothing on a solid wall accompanied by a hanging plant:
Liquidate vs Re-Listing Items
After I discovering a new format that fit the bill, the next step is to decide what I am doing with the inventory that I will be sorting through over the next month. Personally, I find this to be a great opportunity to not only re-photograph and re-list items but also to pull and liquidate items that have been sitting unsold for over a year. Most of these items are marked with an emoji icon in my Poshmark listings so I know exactly which ones to look for when sorting. I have tried to liquidate them myself on the app and I have had some luck with it but many of the items are still sitting unsold. Hopefully, I can either take them to a buy-sell-trade store or send them off to ThredUp to try to recoup my cost of goods.
Getting Caught Up on Current Inventory
Before attempting to tackle this project, I need to make sure that all of my current inventory is photographed, measured, and drafted ready-to-list. If I don’t prepare and work through these items ahead of time then I will more than likely put them off until I finish my re-photographing project; And I really don’t want to put myself in that position. At the moment, I currently have 250+ items drafted (both men’s and women’s) and ready-to-list over the next few weeks while I work on this massive project. These items will be added to my closet daily (Monday through Friday) along with the items that I am re-photographing and re-listing.
My Plan for Tackling 2000+ Items
When it comes to actually tackling this project, there is some level of strategy involved. As of right now my plan is to re-photograph and re-list items in the following order: (1) Dresses, (2) Items Stored on Open Shelves, (3) Items Stored in Bags, and (4) Items Stored in Bins. The items stored in bins are going to be the most difficult to work through as they are wrapped in plastic and will need to be taken out and handled individually. My plan is to work through 1-2 bins/racks per day with the hopes of getting through everything by the end of June. Due to how labor intensive this is going to be for me to tackle solo, I will not be doing much sourcing throughout the month of June. I will be providing updates on this project on my Instagram so be sure to follow along if you would like learn more.
