Lately, I can’t help but feel as though I have lost my creative spirit. The stresses of life have finally caught up with me and I have been feeling a little down. Yesterday, I wasn’t feeling myself and a little voice told me to go out and buy the book, #GirlBoss by Sophia Amoroso. I have had it on my reading wish list for weeks now but because my time is so limited, I wasn’t sure if I would have an extra couple of hours to read it. Despite my time concerns, I listened to the little voice in my head and bought the book.
And you know what? I am SO happy that I bought this book! When I picked it up from Barnes and Nobles, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I have seen this book posted all over Instagram but never really paid too much attention to it. Eventually, I stumbled across the #girlboss hashtag on Instagram and I quickly realized that I could relate to the numerous quotes and phrases surrounding the hashtag. Every phrase or quote that I read provided words of empowerment and encouragement to women who wanted to live out their dreams and make something of themselves in this world. How can you not relate to that?
#GirlBoss focuses around the life and experiences of Sophia Amoruso, the founder of Nasty Gal. Throughout the book, Amoruso shares advice on how to fight for your dreams and how to work towards living the life that you want to live. With every vignette, Amoruso also shares excellent business and life advice from her experiences as both a teenager struggling to maintain a job and as a CEO of her now seven-year company, Nasty Gal. Through her personal struggles and successes, Amoruso encourages her readers to work hard, fight hard, and be the best #girlboss that they can be.
After completing this book, I am inspired to up my game and rework a few things in order to move closer toward my goals. Life is all about learning from past mistakes and using those experiences to help you grow and mature as you move forward. It is from these experiences that we move closer towards our dreams and aspirations. One thing that this book has taught me is to never stop working towards something bigger, even if you don’t know exactly what that “something” is yet. If you are willing to work hard, roll with the punches, and stay positive through all of the challenges and struggles, then you will start to see magic happen when you least expect it. Look at Sophia Amoruso, for example. Amoruso started out by running an Ebay store called, Nasty Girl Vintage, reselling vintage clothing to fashionistas. Little did she know that her little Ebay shop would slowly turn into a multimillion dollar company within seven years.
I want to leave you with my favorite quote from the book. Amoruso states, “I always suspected that I was destined for, and that I was capable of something bigger.” This quote resonates with me because I have mumbled these exact words to myself over and over again before ever reading this book. I have learned that by believing in your abilities and by believing in yourself , you can achieve greatness in ways that you have never imagined.
