This past Thursday, I was featured on List Perfectly’s Superseller Session where I talked about my reselling journey with all of you on an Instagram live. Thank you to everyone who tuned in to watch as I really enjoyed sharing my story with all of you! In case you were unable to attend my live, I wanted to write up a quick post summarizing everything we discussed in the Live. Let’s get to it!
Alex from List Perfectly moderated the live and asked me a series of questions regarding to my reselling journey. Here are some of the questions I was asked along with my responses to them:
What platforms do you sell on?
I’ve been selling on Poshmark since 2013 and I joined Mercari in January 2020. I also sell on TheRealReal, ThredUp, and Tradesy.
Do you find that items that sell on Mercari sell at a lower price point than Poshmark?
Not really. I have observed that are less sellers on Mercari compared to Poshmark, especially when it comes to clothing. As a result, you are not in competition with as many people when you are trying to sell an item. Therefore, you can increase the price higher than on Poshmark, especially if you are the only person selling the item on the app.
What is your best sale to date?
My best sale to date was a Moncler coat that I purchased at Thrifty Shopper for $12.99 (and yes I did a happy dance). I sold it on TheRealReal within days of it going up for $312.50.
What is one thing that you wish you had known when you first started reselling?
There are many things that I wish that I had known in the beginning but the most important thing that I wish that I had known is how important it is to have knowledge in both fashion and business/marketing. I have always loved fashion; I have the ability to navigate my way through designer brands, trends, and luxury authentication with ease. Going into reselling, I had 50% of the equation down. What I did not have a solid knowledge base in was business and marketing. At the time, I was in college and was just trying to get rid of some personal items that I no longer used. I never in a million years thought that I would have my own reselling business 5 years later. And that is why I wish that I had the business and marketing knowledge at the beginning. As with so many of us resellers (myself included), what started off as a hobby slowly turns into a business without even realizing it and all of a sudden, we have to file as a business, pay taxes, along with so many other things. Therefore, having that knowledge upfront helps to minimize the confusion later and helps to make you a more informed reseller.
At what point did you realize that you needed to file as a business?
When I started making a profit, I filed as a business. Each state is different so familiarize yourself with your state’s guidelines.
What is it like thrift shopping in New York?
With COVID, thrift shopping in general has been very difficult. I started off by sourcing online but that got old quick and now that thrift stores have opened, I have started thrifting in-store again with the necessary precautions.
How can we get into contact with you and/or learn more about you?
I can be contacted through my website, Instagram, and email.
