Did you know that there are replica Lilly Pulitzer pieces out there? As a reseller, it is important to know the difference between Lilly wannabe’s and the real deal. Recently, I had a Poshmark case opened against me in regards to a Lilly Pulitzer dress. The buyer claimed that the dress with inauthentic and as a reseller, I had to provide “proof” that the dress was indeed authentic. Today, I wanted to provide you with some information on how to authenticate Lilly Pulitzer pieces in case the same ever happens to you.
Tips for Authenticating Lilly Pulitzer
1) Spot the Hidden “Lilly”
Did you know that every authentic Lilly Pulitzer piece has the word “Lilly” incorporated somewhere into the piece? Sometimes, the word “Lilly” is subtly incorporated into the pattern. Other times, it can be found sewn into the inner lining or seam. This is very important to know as a reseller, especially in authentication cases, as it can be used when proving authenticity.
Check out a few examples below:
2) Know the Hardware
When it comes to hardware, it is important to know that Lilly Pulitzer pieces are made with high quality buttons and zippers. Buttons should have the word “Lilly” written on them and the zipper should be YKK. Note: Hardware can be replaced especially if it is broken or damaged so this shouldn’t be the only factor used when trying to determine authenticity.
3) Know Manufacturing and Headquarter Locations
When looking at the inner fabric tag on an authentic Lilly Pulitzer piece, you will notice a few different pieces of information. First, you will likely see a manufacturing location. Depending on the age of the item, this location will vary. More recent pieces will have manufacturing locations including: India, China, Vietnam, and Peru (to name a few).
Additionally, it is important to note another location mentioned on the inner tags. It reads, “Sugartown Worldwide LLC 800 Third Avenue King of Prussia, PA.” Sugartown Worldwide LLC is the company that currently owns and operates the Lilly Pulitzer brand and King of Prussia, PA is where the Lilly Pulitzer headquarters is located.
4) The Evolution of Labels
Lilly Pulitzer labels have evolved over time and here are a few general things to know about them:
Prior to 2000, Lilly Pulitzer labels were a white sewn on label with “TM” after the name.
Between 2000 and 2006, Lilly Pulitzer labels were still a white sewn on label but the “TM” after the name was replaced with the “R” circular logo.
After 2006, Lilly Pulitzer labels were drastically changed from the white label to a pink one as seen the in photos below. The thickness of the strip varies depending on the item. Sometimes, the pink label is completely removed and the Lilly Pulitzer logo and size information is stamped directly onto the garment itself.
