Do you check for product recalls before you sell items? Last week, one of my followers on Instagram shared an experience with me about something that happened when they went to sell their items at a local buy-sell-trade store. While they were there, the store turned away some of their items due to a few recalls that the seller was unaware of. Consumer recalls are not typically something that someone thinks about before selling or reselling items secondhand. I was first introduced to recalls when I worked at Once Upon A Child as we were trained to look up all equipment items for recalls along with sign up for weekly emails. Today, I wanted to share with you some insight on consumer products recalls and share some helpful resources.
What are Consumer Product Recalls?
Consumer product recalls are products that are recalled because they are deemed dangerous due to many consumer reports and accidents. These items should stop being used immediately, especially if the recall is due to a safety concern. Many items that are commonly recalled include: children’s pajamas, baby equipment, children’s toys, outdoor gear/ equipment, furniture, and children’s clothing.
As a reseller, it is important to know what items are recalled as it is illegal to sell recalled products. As a former employee of Once Upon a Child who has dealt with numerous recalled products, I can tell you that many more items are recalled then you might be aware of. In the children’s resale market, the most commonly recalled items that we encountered were cribs, certain Bumbo models, and certain rocker models. It is also important to be aware of these recalls as a consumer as you don’t want to buy a recalled item on accident.
How to Find a Recalled Product
Visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website HERE.
From here, you can search for the item on the website. It will then tell you if the item is recalled, what it is recalled for, and if you need to return the product for a refund or buy a replacement part to make the product safe.
As a reseller, I highly suggest signing up for their email notifications so that you can be alerted of recalls on a regular basis especially if you sell hard goods and children’s items.
Additionally, as a consumer, this is a great website to learn about the safety history of manufacturers. On this website, you can search by company to learn about their previous recalls and determine a company’s safety record.
