As a full-time reseller, I need to diversify my income streams in order to maximize on my earnings. In order to do this, I sell my items on multiple reselling platforms. Currently, I have items for sale on Poshmark, Mercari, Tradesy, and Kidizen. I have also sent items in for consignment to The RealReal and ThredUp. If that wasn’t complicated enough, I also manage 2 Poshmark accounts and 2 Mercari accounts. Today, I wanted to share with you how I manage these accounts and why I decided to create multiple accounts on Poshmark and Mercari.
Back to the Beginning
In order to get to where I am now, I think that it is worth going back in time and looking at my early reselling days. When I first started reselling, I was only on the Poshmark app. Eventually, I invested in ListPerfectly and cross listed all of my inventory to Mercari and then, Tradesy and Kidizen. On each of these platforms, I was very specific in the items that I was selling. In my early days, I sold all categories of items on Poshmark and Mercari; Tradesy is still limited by design to mid-tier and luxury designer items; Kidizen is a newer platform for me and I like to focus on children’s and casual women’s pieces on there.
One problem that I had, specifically with Poshmark and Mercari, was when it came to selling men’s pieces. I was having a very difficult time moving them when they were combined with all of my other categories. I’m sure that there are people out there who are able to sell everything under one closet, but I learned very quickly that I am not one of those people. After months of little to no men’s sales, I decided that I needed to take a different approach; I created a separate men’s closet.
Running 2 Poshmark and Mercari Accounts
When it comes to having multiple accounts on reselling platforms, there are a few things that you should know. In order to have multiple Poshmark accounts, you need to either write to them for permission to do so or have someone that you know run the account for you. I chose the later. Running multiple accounts on Mercari is a little more challenging to do as the email addresses cannot be the same and you cannot link the same bank account to 2 Mercari accounts. However, if you have someone else use their name and/or email to create the account, there should not be any problems. My husband, Eric, runs both of these accounts under his name so we didn’t have any issues with this.
The day-to-day operations of running 2 accounts under each of these platforms is pretty manageable. Usually, when I wake up in the morning, I will re-list some items from the men’s account and then add a few new items daily. When it comes to running the accounts, I am in charge in sourcing, photographing, listings, and shipping. Eric will share the Poshmark closet throughout the day, send out offers, and communicate with buyers. This process seems to be working well for us so far.
An Increase in Sales
I don’t know if this was a coincidence or if there is something to this but the minute that I separated the men’s items from the women’s items, they started to sell. According to Eric (from a male perspective), men are more inclined to shop from places where they don’t have to sift through items that are not appealing to them (aka other reselling categories). Additionally, men are more included to shop from another male’s account. I don’t know if there is any truth to that but I did notice that once we switched it over, the majority of our buyers were male compared to the many women buyers that we had when everything was combined.
Some of our best selling men’s brands include: Lululemon, Nike/Adidas, No Bull, Rhone, Bonobos, Psycho Bunny, UnTuckit, and anything Luxury.
Why I Continue to Run Multiple Accounts on the Same Platform
1) The Poshmark Algorithm Fluctuates– I have nothing to prove this to be true but I have observed some very interesting patterns between the two closets. There have been many times when one closet is performing poorly and the other is performing amazingly. I don’t have a definitely reason for why this happens but due to this observation, I will continue to run both accounts. They end up balancing each other out and help me to maintain daily sales.
2) Increased Sales– As I mentioned previously, I have noticed an increase in my sales by maintaining two separate accounts. That being said, it doesn’t make sense for me to go back to a singular account.
3) Easier to Manage– It is a lot easier for me to manage my men’s items when they are in a separate account. I am able to better track my inventory levels by doing this and am also able to ensure that they are getting the proper attention in order to make sales.
4) Additional Income Opportunities– Whenever anyone starts selling a new category on any reselling platform, it is creating additional income opportunities. I am all for maximizing my income streams and by selling men’s items, I am able to do that.
