How many times have you walked in to a thrift store and seen an aisle like the above picture? I’m guessing that it has happened to you at least once. At first glance, you are probably thinking to yourself, ‘Ugh, none of these shoes are winners. Why did I even waste my time walking down this aisle?’ We’ve all been there. Going into this aisle with that mindset is doing so much more harm than good. Today, I want to share with you how I changed my own mindset when it comes to reselling to fully embrace the Reseller Mindset.
You’re first question is probably, “What is this Reseller Mindset that you keep talking about?”
The Reseller Mindset is a mentally that allows you to see the potential value in all items that you stumble across while sourcing. I feel that many resellers have the tendency to trap themselves in a box; And I can say that because for the longest time, I was one of those resellers myself. Once COVID came, I realized that I had to get out of my set reseller ways and start to see the value in other platforms and income streams.
I think that we all have a tendency to stay in our safe, happy spaces and not push ourselves to grow, especially during uncertain times. This mentally really allows you to challenge yourself to see the value in items and/or brands that you may be currently unfamiliar with.
To make this a little bit easier, let’s look at this mindset in action- Let me start by asking you a simple question: When you go sourcing, what is your thought process?
Do you pick items based on personal taste, what is “on-trend” at the moment, or a combination of both?
When you find an item while sourcing, do you bypass it because you think that it is not worth anything or do you actually research the item on multiple platforms to see if the item potentially does have value on a platform that you are not familiar with?
One thing that I have learned recently is that you really need to diversify your income streams as a reseller. Many people cannot afford to put their eggs all in one basket in order to succeed long-term. I recently really took an interest in learning more about other reselling methods, especially apps such as ThredUP and it has really opened my eyes to this. I watched videos on YouTube of other resellers who bought items that I would typically pass over and made a TON of money on them on platforms that I don’t normally sell on myself. This really opened my eyes to what I have been missing out on as a reseller myself.
To really embrace this mindset while sourcing, I would suggest when you find an item, look it up on at least 3 different reselling platforms. Something that might only sell for $15-$20 on Poshmark or Mercari may sell for $50+ on ThredUP. I think that we forget sometimes that each reseller app has their own targeted audience. Once we learn what each audience wants, it is a lot easier to target your sourcing to cater to that audience.
Don’t be afraid to branch out and if you can, try to embrace the Reseller Mentality!
