Retail stores are now starting to open up and it can be SOOO tempting to step in a store and buy everything in sight (trust me I know). As tempting as it may seem, as business owners, we still need to continue to make smart buying decisions, no matter how good the sale is. Over the past week or so, I have shopped at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Burlington, and Plato’s Closet to name a few. Today, I am going to focus on a few of these stores and share how to source their sales like a reselling pro.
TJ Maxx/Marshalls
If you don’t already know, TJ Maxx and Marshalls have had some of the best post-COVID retail sales. Most of these stores have storewide savings with many items deeply discounted. Why? To remove stale inventory so they can make room for new shipments. I can tell you from personal experience that (1) these stores were crowded with people on their opening weekends (but they do have a max capacity) and (2) they get emptied out pretty quickly. So far, I have visited 5 TJ Maxx/Marshalls stores in the past 2 weeks and I’ve noticed the same pattern across all of the stores. By the end of week 2, they have continued to keep clearance items on the floor but have also brought in new inventory at their normal low prices.
If you do consider sourcing with the TJX company, please keep in mind that all of the stores across the country are running the same sales and there is going to be competition within the community when it comes to selling online. Remember to still check comps on everything you find before buying as you may find a great item that their doesn’t have a good resale value or is being sold by many other people.
Burlington
This store has had the most impressive sale post-COVID as their entire store is up to 50%. Yes, you heard me correctly- up to 50% off! At my local store, all clothing and shoes are 50% off and accessories are an extra 25% off. I went to the store on the second day of their reopening and it was a disaster!! Clothing was in the homewares section, shoes were mixed in with outerwear and baby items were messily within shoes. Some of my best finds were actually in the shoe section as I scored 8 pairs of shoes for under $70. What was even more impressive with Burlington is that once they ran out of shoes, they brought out at least 20 boxes at a time to restock so they never ran out of inventory. I’m not sure how long the sale is going to go on for but what a way to clear out inventory!
A few other points to keep in mind: (1) You may not find anything when you walk into one of these stores and that is 100% okay, (2) Remember your time is money- Be ready to experience long lines so if the item is not worth your time in line, pass on it, (3) People are going to try and fight you for an item so please don’t forget to keep your social distancing amongst the chaos, and (4) ALWAYS remember to check comps on everything that you are considering buying.
