Think back to the last time that you were at your local thrift store. Did you notice that there was a better selection of goodies than normal??!! Well, I have surely noticed a difference in the items that I find while thrifting lately and I thought to myself, ‘Could this be a result of Marie Kondo and how her organizing style has impacted America?’ I definitely thought that this a topic worth exploring and so why not talk about Marie Kondo is affecting the world of resale on the blog today.
So at this point, you are probably thinking to yourself, ‘Who is Marie Kondo?’ That’s a great question! Marie Kondo is a Japanese organizing consultant and author but who is best known for her Netflix show, “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo”. On the show, she demonstrates her part practical, part spiritual KonMari method for organizing homes. This method involves deciding whether an item brings its’ owner joy or not. According to Kondo, people should only be keeping items that bring them joy.
As a result, many thrift stores nationwide have noticed a huge uptuck in donations as people are donating items that no longer bring them joy. There is no way to know for sure if there is a direct correlation between Marie Kondo and the increase in donations but I personally think that there might be.
There are so many varying opinions on Kondo and her method but I personally find it to be an amazing time to be a reseller. 2019 has been the best year for reselling yet (in my opinion) and I’m sure that will only continue to be true moving forward. If you haven’t already, I would take 30 minutes from your day and check out an episode of Marie Kondo’s show and familiarize yourself with her method.
