My love of thrift shopping and resale began during my sophomore year of college. Looking for a way to prolong my schoolwork, I spontaneously decided to visit the local Goodwill near campus. The moment I walked through the door, my love affair with thrift shopping began. Nearly four years later, my love of thrift shopping and resale continues to consume my life in the best way possible. Unfortunately, not all of my thrift finds are fortunate enough to have a home in my closet so I try to find them a new home through Poshmark.
Poshmark is an online website and app that focuses on reselling women’s fashion and accessories. Brands range from mall stores like Charlotte Russe and Forever 21 to designer brands such as Louis Vuitton and Celine. It is free to set up an account and sell items through the Poshmark app (available in the app store). When selling an item, you need to provide pictures of the item, fill out an item description and determine a selling price. Once an item sells, Poshmark collects a 20% commission from the selling price and the seller receives the remaining balance through a mailed check or direct deposit.
As an active user of Poshmark since college, I have learned a thing or two about online resale and how to succeed at it:
Tip #1: Bedtime is Sale Time
As a Top 10% seller on Poshmark, I have observed that most of my sales occur between 10 PM and 12 AM EST. I’m not sure if it due to the Posh Party that occurs at 10 PM or if people are trying to kill time before going to bed, but these hours are my “golden hours.” Identifying when the Poshmark community is most active is extremely important when making sales.
Tip #2: Know What Sells
Just because you think that a handbag is amazing does not mean that the rest of the world agrees with you. Resale involves developing a sale-driven mentality placing the focus away from personal style and more on buying what will sell. Most of the items that I sell are not items that I would necessarily wear but having a solid understanding of your audience’s wants and needs is what drives your sales.
Tip #3: Develop a Backbone
One of Poshmark’s new features is the ability to make an offer. This is a great feature for buyers but can be a nightmare for sellers. I have no problem with getting a good bargain but there is a fine line between bargain and insult. When people present you with offers, you need to be able to judge whether an offer is reasonable or not. With this in mind, try to price items a little bit higher than what you are expecting for it. By doing so, people feel like they are getting a bargain and you still make a profit.
Tip #4: Take Good Pictures
This one is a no-brainer but taking good pictures is a MUST when selling items online. Your photos must appeal to your audience and attract interest from potential buyers. Pictures should be bright, vibrant, clear, and precise. More importantly, your photos should not conceal flaws. It is your responsibility as a seller to show any imperfections on the item(s) that you are trying to sell. Always be honest with your buyers and provide as much information as necessary!
