Over the years, I have had a love-hate relationship with skirts. When I was younger, I used to HATE wearing skirts. I was very active as a dancer and liked wearing articles of clothing that let me move freely. Skirts weren’t a major issue for me while dancing but outside of the studio, I hated wearing them. Actually, I refused to wear them until my freshman year of high school. It was during this time that I grew into the true woman that I am and I learned to fully embrace wearing skirts, dresses, and all other girly things in public.
It’s funny looking back on it because now I live in skirts, dresses, and rompers during the summer time. My current love for skirts and dresses stems from living in the Florida heat and needing to wear items that were light and airy to stay cool. (Side Note: Is it just me or do all of my fashion choices originate from my time in Florida?) As a result, I rarely wear shorts during the summertime. In fact, I went as far as to trade my shorts for skirts. If you were to look at my wardrobe, you would see that I own 3 times as many skirts as I do shorts. Is it healthy? Probably not but it makes me happy so I don’t really care.
So why would I go as far as to trade in my shorts for skirts? In all honesty, I felt like the shorts that I used to wear made me feel like less than myself. They were too short and didn’t make me feel good about myself when I wore them. When I started wearing skirts, on the other hand, I felt like a powerful and confident woman. I held my head a little higher and stood up a little taller. When I later added a pair of heels to the mix, I felt like I was on top of the world.
I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with wearing shorts but when you do wear them, please keep it classy and choose an appropriate inseam. At the end of the day, if what you wear doesn’t make you feel like the classy, confident, and strong woman that you are, then get rid of them. You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life.
