Earlier this week, I decided to take on yet another reselling platform. That means that in total, I am currently reselling on 4 platforms: Poshmark, Mercari, Tradesy, and Kidizen. Of these platforms, the newest platform that I am selling on is Kidizen. Why? First and foremost, 2022 is going to be a year of growth for me and adding more platforms to my list is part of the growing process. The more platforms that I am on, the more sales that I can make. Also, joining additional platforms has helped me to step out of my comfort zone as a reseller.
As someone who has been reselling for 8+ years now, it is really easy to stay within your comfort zone. At this point in your reselling career, you have a pretty clear idea of what is selling and what is not; and you have the knowledge base to really perfect your individual business where it is currently. As someone who is set in your ways, it is a little harder to step out of your comfort zone and learn about new categories.
Today, I wanted to share with you a few reasons as to why I believe that it can be really beneficial to you as a reseller to step outside of your comfort zone and learn about other areas of resale:
1) Increased Sales
When I originally started reselling, my main focus was on women’s clothing and shoes. Specifically, I focused my attention on mid-tier luxury and top-tier luxury as these were items that I personally found interesting to me. As time went on and I became more confident in my selling abilities, I started dabbling into men’s pieces, home items, and children’s pieces. Eventually, I went on to create an entire men’s closet and joined 3 more reselling platforms in order to diversify my income streams. I learned throughout this process that by joining additional platforms and selling items outside my comfort zones, I was able to make more sales and maximize my profits.
2) Expands Your Knowledge Base
During the second half of last year, Eric introduced me to the world of sneakers. I knew that sneakers were a high profit item but never really had the time nor energy to put towards learning about them. That all changed when I went to a Plato’s Closet here in Tampa and found a pair of sneakers that had a resale value of $350+. I was shocked! After that happened, I have spent quite a bit of time learning more about the sneaker world. Now, I have enough knowledge to know if a sneaker has value or not just by looking at the style and color ways. The same goes for other areas of resale such as hard goods, children’s items and home items. If you spend some time learning about other areas of resale, you will increase your reselling knowledge which will hopefully lead to more efficient sourcing trips.
3) Items Appeal to Multiple Buyers
Selling a variety of items can help you to appeal to multiple buyers. If you stick to one niche, it is important to note that you are narrowing your customer base. However, if you are open to selling items outside of your niche, it can open a world of possibilities. Last year, I began selling Disney Parks items on Poshmark and Mercari. By doing this, I was bringing in a different group of customers. These customers not only bought Disney items but also bundled them with other non-Disney items from my closet. Had I not had those Disney items in my closet, I don’t know that those buyers ever would have stumbled into my closet. If I had not started selling some items outside of my normal comfort zone, I don’t know that I would have made some of the sales that I made last year.
All-in-all, as a reseller it is important to look at all of your options for your business. Personally, I find that selling items outside of my normal comfort zone has lead to more sales, expanded my knowledge base, and allowed me to connect with new buyers. For those reasons, I love selling items outside of my comfort zone.
